Start Your Own Story

For the last nine years, the International 3D Congress on Dental Imaging has brought the concept of 3D imaging alive through lectures and demonstrations of real cases and experiences. During these events, knowledgeable clinicians and experts discussed the evolving role of 3D applications from orthodontics to implants to airway applications and esthetics. Speakers examined ways to improve patients’ lives with the help of CBCT technology in clinical situations such after traumatic injury and for business aspects by learning more about dental insurance claims.

i-CAT is proud of the key opinion leaders that grace our speakers’ podiums at these impactful events. But, you don’t have to take our word for it. Here are some thoughts from colleagues after attending the April Congress.

“The information presented was fresh, exciting and amazing! I’m looking forward to taking this new technology back to my practice and providing a whole new level of care to our patients.” – Dennis Yossi, DDS

“Exceptionally professional with experienced and polished presenters who all have excellent speaking skills and credentials. Highly recommend.” – Albert St. Germain, DDS
“Great weekend of learning!” – Paul Van Raaphorst, DDS, MS, PC

“What a great seminar! So full of information and such wonderful presenters! Thank you!” – Christina Cronk

“This was a great lecture series! It solidified my opinion that 3D treatment planning is the future of orthodontics.” – Jason Charnley, DDS

“A great course for all levels of dentists.” – Donald Hoaglin, DDS

“I have been to many meetings in my career lifetime, and I can honestly say that this meeting was the best run meeting I have ever been to. Great speakers, great food, outstanding conference facility. Definitely a come-again experience.“ – John Napalitano, DDS

In addition to information for those who are just discovering the many facets of 3D imaging, the Customer Users’ Meeting was back by popular demand the day before the Congress. Good deeds, beautiful smiles, and lasting memories

On Thanksgiving, our thoughts turn to gratitude, to friends and family, and to using our special talents to help those less fortunate. For Dr. Darshana Novick, striving to show her appreciation for her patients is a year-round activity. She wants to help make memories long past the day when their braces are removed. She says, “In orthodontics, I have the ability to be a part of my patients’ lives in the present and in the future. Every time they see their smile in a photo of a special moment, like graduation or their wedding day, or even in their daily life, they think of their orthodontic experience with us.” When Dr. Novick saw the capabilities of i-CAT 3D scanning, she thought that the extra dimension in imaging would make her River Forest, Illinois practice even more memorable. “I have three little girls, and I would want for my children to be in a practice that allowed the doctors to see everything in such detail to make the best treatment plan for the patients. I wanted that option in my practice.”

Besides choosing a dynamic imaging method, Dr. Novick continually explores fun and helpful ways to spread the word about her office to grow her patient base. She says, “We are active in our community. We make an effort at least once a month to do community outreach and volunteer support in different areas.” So far, the office team has volunteered to box books at the Oak Park/River Forest Library, to clean and pet furry friends at the local animal shelter, and to assist at a golf fundraiser for Opportunity Knocks, a community for people with developmental disabilities. Dr. Novick says, “I feel that it is important to support the community that has supported us for seven years. We are a part of our patients’ lives, and the different organizations in River Forest/Oak Park are tied into our patients and families.” She continues, “We spent a lot of time and energy figuring out the different needs of the community. It is important to give back. We are in the office every day, all day long. It’s good to get out and help people. We create beautiful smiles through orthodontics every day in the office, and in the same vein, by volunteering, we help to put smiles on even more people’s faces.”

We applaud Dr. Novick and her team and all dental professionals that ‘give back.’ You are changing the world for the better—and that is something to be thankful for!

Happy Thanksgiving from Team i-CAT!

Starting their own stories

Every day, in dental practices, clinicians build stories — stories of how their dentistry improved a patient’s life, helped to perfect a smile, or even played a role in helping them to breathe easier. At the 9th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging, attendees will learn about applications of 3D imaging technology that can help them build that story. Before the Congress even starts, the Users’ Meeting on Thursday, April 16 will be bustling with practitioners and staff members that are already invested in i-CAT technology.

This day is all about them. Peter Soto, Product Specialist for i-CAT™, notes, “With updated and fresh topics and information, the Users’ Meeting educates doctors and their staffs on how to take full advantage of this powerful product so that they can start building success stories of their own.” “The Users’ Meeting is really unique in that we can really touch all parts of the practice,” says Soto. Sessions feature hands-on opportunities such as live positioning optimization and selecting the best scan for each patient through scanning protocols, resolution and field of view. Software sessions include a Tx STUDIO™ refresher and a session for advanced users. And, a new track explores reimbursement for the evolving study of airway. Soto adds, “We have i-CAT team members there who really understand what the doctors and staff members are looking for and can explain at all levels of proficiency. Our session on product updates and the future of 3D imaging opens up even more options for as i-CAT technology continues to evolve.”

“It is all about better results,” says Soto. “Doctors are bringing their staff members to learn about billing and coding and how to work more efficiently with insurance companies. There will be a track on how to market to patients through presentations so they can understand the potential results and be happier with the practice.”

“Whether the doctors are new or experienced users, we want them to feel like a part of the i-CAT family, to interact, sit down at lunch with like-minded practitioners, and understand how their peers are using 3D imaging and treatment planning software to raise their practice to a higher level,” says Soto. “As the Product Specialist, I enjoy reaching out to customers and letting them know that we are there for them, even after they return to their offices.”

Their Story has already featured some memorable cases on how i-CAT imaging played a part in changing patients’ lives. Learn more about Their Story at http://stories.i-cat.com. Soto explains. “At the Users’ Meeting, we want to help all of our users to build their own stories. We want them to understand the powerful tool that they have and how to use it to provide the care that their patients deserve. The potential is huge.”

Navigating insurance reimbursement — stay afloat when insurance rocks the boat!

Ms. Taxin speaks at the Congress

As April 17 approaches, speakers are getting excited that the 9th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging is getting closer by the minute! As dentists “dream to do more,” i-CAT wants to help dental professionals change those dreams into realities. That’s why speakers at the Congress will share their knowledge about topics that run a gamut from implants to airway-centered treatment planning. One of the speakers, Christine Taxin, will offer her insights on a non-clinical aspect of the practice. In “Insurance and Billing-The Ins and Outs of Dental Insurance: Learning How to Navigate Dental Benefits in Your Office,” Taxin will share tips on billing for CBCT scans and will also speak at the Users Meeting the day before the Congress officially starts. By navigating efficiently, dentists will learn how to stay afloat and not to feel adrift in the insurance arena.

Taxin will discuss the difference between medical and dental billing and will explore the nuances of medical billing for dental procedures.  She has noted that billing to medical insurance is different than to dental insurance. For example, medical insurance does not focus on what your patient needs, they need to know why they need the treatment…more on this during her lecture.

Billing properly for CBCT procedures in an evolving healthcare marketplace is imperative for reimbursement without hassles. Taxin will also be discussing a new development on the insurance horizon—accreditation of 3D imaging equipment. This new accreditation currently only applies to Medicare claims, however, she projects that once this system is firmly in place, state and private insurance may, in time, also institute similar requirements. Accreditation does not refer to the doctor, but to accrediting the facility that houses the machine, much like an imaging center.

Want to hear more about how to reduce the stress of insurance claims?  Then make your plans to attend today! You can learn more about this and many more valuable topics involving 3D.

2014 Marks a Great 10 Years for i-CAT!

2014 was another exciting year for Team i-CAT, especially since we celebrated our 10th anniversary! This milestone was made even more special with the debut of the i-CAT™ FLX MV, the medium field of view member of the i-CAT family of brands. Tx STUDIO™ 5.3 software was updated with enhanced treatment tools that allow clinicians to better combine their 3D images with intraoral scanning applications for digital impressions as well as the ability to share STL files and 3D images with the lab.

i-CAT continues to be recognized by the dental community. The i-CAT FLX cone beam 3D imaging system was recognized in 2014 with the Pride Institute’s “Best of Class” Technology Award for excellence for the second consecutive year. Early in the year, i-CAT also was honored to win the Orthotown Townie Choice Award in the X-ray equipment/cone beam CT scanner category. These esteemed recognitions by practicing clinicians and technology leaders speak volumes about our 3D imaging and encourage us to continue research and development that improves workflow and creates more low-dose
imaging protocols.

2014 also marked another year of educational experiences, with two sessions of the 8th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging. With a theme of “Accelerate Your Practice: 3D-driven Success,” the Fall two-day event featured lectured and demonstrations of real 3D imaging applications in implants, orthodontics, TMJ and airway diagnosis, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and periodontics. Dr. Joseph Desio of Warrenton, Virginia was the
lucky winner of the $50,000 off of an i-CAT sweepstakes, and he looks forward to all of the benefits that i-CAT will bring to his patients and his practice.

Team i-CAT looks forward to 2015 — with high hopes for low-dose scanning, best wishes for successful multi-dimensional practices and quality three-dimensional images, and most of all, health and happiness for all of the members of the i-CAT family.

See you next year!

Awaken an interest in airway at Dr. Quintero’s session

As a speaker at the 8th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging, Dr. Juan-Carlos Quintero will probably have some sleepless nights preparing his speech for the event. But he knows one thing for sure—when he does sleep, he is assured that his airway is the right size to keep him breathing properly since he has benefited from airway treatment. “Breathing is the foundation of life and a function of the anatomy,” says Dr. Quintero. In his session, titled “CBCT and Airway-Centered Treatment Planning,” Dr. Quintero notes that airways have been overlooked and undermanaged, due to practical and technological limitations. However, through the use of new low-dose CBCT technology with the treatment planning software tools, airway anatomy, among other structures, can be clearly visualized, accurately measured and zoomed-in to identify details.  Attendees will learn about how to incorporate airway information into everyday diagnosis as well as how to treatment plan around it.

Dr. Quintero explains that “the new goal of orthodontics is the expansion of the craniofacial skeleton in children in order to implement treatment early in life before other medical conditions develop.” His i-CAT is an integral part of the screening process.  When viewing the airway on an i-CAT scan within 3D imaging software, sections of the images are color-coded which provide additional information. “With the help of the airway measurement tool in Tx STUDIO™, we can plot the superior and inferior limits of the airway and reconstruct it in the software,” he describes, continuing, “For airway analysis, 2D pans and cephs will not serve the purpose as well as 3D views. With an i-CAT FLX system, I can select the scan size and dose based on the patient’s individual needs and see the nose, back of the throat, and base of the tongue, the most common areas affected in the case of obstruction of the pharynx.”

Attendees to the event will also learn more about the anatomical relationships regarding airways from a medical perspective. Dr. Frank Kronberg, an ENT, will discuss some common findings in a CBCT scan and also give his perspective on the subject of airways and imaging.

Dynamic speakers will ensure that no one dozes off at any of these sleep disorder-related sessions!

Dr. Brattesani—Thoughts on Moderating the 8th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging

On November 7 and 8, Dr. Cynthia Brattesani, named one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry by Dental Products Report in 2014, will moderate the 8th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging. The event, themed “Accelerate Your Practice: 3D Driven Success,” will spotlight real 3D applications in dentistry through workshops, lectures and demonstrations of 3D imaging applications in dentistry. Dr. Brattesani notes that the guiding tenets of her practice are: “Trust, innovation, respect and integrity.” To help reach those objectives, she has implemented technologies that not only boost diagnosis and treatment planning, but also those that facilitate ease of communication with patients. Imaging is integral to all of those goals.

Dr. Brattesani quotes Charles Darwin who said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, or the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” She explains that thriving practices must “embrace change” and “enjoy the challenge.” In doing so, she has implemented many new technologies, with the most recent being her implementation of the i-CAT™ FLX™ cone beam 3D system designed to give general dentists and specialists the tools to place and restore implants, perform oral surgery, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery with greater confidence and lower radiation. “I am excited about implementing this amazing diagnostic and treatment planning tool into my practice, not only for myself, but I also look forward to sharing the findings of the images with specialists that I work with,” she said. “One of the most exciting aspects of this system is that we will be able to select the scan size and dose based on each of my patients’ needs—including many low-dose options.”

“As the moderator of this event, I look forward to attending the sessions myself and learning from the knowledgeable speakers who already have used this technology to improve patient care and communication,” say Dr. Brattesani. “I think that all clinicians, from general dentists to specialists can benefit from the topics, from airway-centered (ENT) treatment planning with Dr. Juan-Carlos Quintero, to using 3D imaging to help avoid dental complications with Dr. Justin Moody, to reducing stress with implants surgery using 3D imaging with Dr. John Russo. Moderating this event marks the beginning of my exciting adventure into the 3D world; this imaging modality will not only be a great clinical benefit to me, and I can’t wait to show my patients the true depiction of their dental anatomy. The trust that will result from the 3D experience will take my practice to a whole new level of dental care.”

It’s that time again!

The old saying goes “time flies when you’re having fun.” The saying for i-CAT™ owners should be “time flies when you are performing innovative and technically exciting dentistry.” It is time once again for members of the dental community to cast their votes for the Townie Choice Awards. This recognition has always been so meaningful to us because it shows that Townie voters across the nation have shared their enthusiasm for our dynamic 3D imaging system. They have personally witnessed the impact that i-CAT cone beam 3D has on diagnosis, treatment planning and patient communication. We are so proud that i-CAT’s quality cone beam 3D imaging systems have won every year since the cone beam category was added, and we are grateful for the loyal i-CAT users who continually give us their thumbs up!

i-CAT FLX™ provides a balance between dose and image quality†, including low-dose options for general dentists and specialists alike. i-CAT scans give clinicians detailed views of the dentition — from single arch to full skull, and a broad array of desired fields in the range between — for informed decisions on orthodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, airway, TMJ studies and a myriad of other procedures. One of the most exciting aspects of scanning with i-CAT is its QuickScan+ feature that allows for a full-dentition 3D scan at a lower dose than a panoramic image*.

Dr. Razi’s Big Win in Las Vegas

Before attending the 8th International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging, Dr. S. Razi never would have bet that he would have a practice-changing experience in Las Vegas. But, he was happy that he didn’t have to go to a casino to return home with an amazing prize! He was the lucky winner of the $50,000 off of an-CAT sweepstakes. Soon, he will be one of the i-CAT family with the ability to use the system’s low-dose setting (QuickScan+) to take a  full-dentition 3D scan with a dose comparable to 2D panoramic X-ray,* as well as powerful tools for more complete treatment options for patients. Dr. Razi shares his excitement on his good fortune and on attending the Congress.

What was your reaction to winning the $50,000 off of an i-CAT sweepstakes?

Winning the sweepstakes took away my only excuse for not getting an i-CAT for my practice. It was a pleasant surprise since I never win anything, especially in Vegas!

Why did you attend the International Congress on 3D Dental Imaging?

I came to the Congress to learn more about i-CAT and its possibilities in the dental field. The subject matter of the seminars and speakers were surprisingly above my exceptions. I was blown away by the diversity of the applications of i-CAT in dental field, from implant dentistry to sleep apnea to orthodontics and endodontics.

What effect do you think 3D imaging will have on your practice?

Minimally invasive dentistry has been my passion and the philosophy of my dental practice. We simply try to provide the most conservative treatment, utilizing the latest available in technology. A complete and thorough diagnostic evaluation is crucial to the principals of minimally invasive dentistry. I believe that i-CAT is the ultimate diagnostic tool available to dentists at the present time, no matter what aspect of dentistry we practice.

How does your staff feel about adding the third dimension to imaging at your practice?

My staff and I are very excited about getting the i-CAT; having the technology at your fingertips is never the same as referring the patients out to get the scan. I believe the real winners are going to be my patients who will receive the best treatment possible as a result of the routine utilization of i-CAT in my office.
